Point Defense Module Overview[]

Point defense (or PD) refers to auto-fire weapon systems meant to intercept and destroy incoming enemy ordnance before it can harm the ship. There are two types of such ordnance in the game: Missiles and Fighters. With the sole exception of Extreme Counterattack, these are the only types of weapons that PD-modules defend against.

While it is possible to mount all of these modules on a ship, that is not a recommended approach. Initially you have access to the basic Anti-Aircraft Cannon, which works for both anti-missile and anti-fighter defense even at a lower level.

The Missile Interception and Fighter Interception Cabin modules have higher interception rates than the Anti-Aircraft Cannon, but they only intercept one specific type of attack (missile or ship-based). Likewise, the Powered_Pulse_Cannon is an improved version of the Anti-Aircraft Cannon and can intercept both missile and fighters, but at a slightly less effectiveness than either the Missile Interception or Fighter Interception Cabin modules.

Note that the Extreme Counterattack module isn't really a defense module nor will it contribute to your interception rate. What it does is add up to 200 points of damage to the reflected damage sent to the attacking fleet.

Note also that to take maximum advantage of any of these, Ship Defense Science should be thoroughly researched.

Enhancements and Mitigators[]

There are certain ships that include an Interception bonus as a part of their hull design. Otherwise, they do not. This bonus is stackable with the modules described herein.
